Intro to My ePortfolio: A Maze of Literary Endeavors!

My name is Anna Shusterman, and this ePortfolio is a journey through the exciting academic world of a Foothill College student. I began at Foothill three years ago, and my main concentration has been improving my literary skills because I believe that the ability to read and write and analyze literature critically is something that is applicable in any stage of life. My desired field is that of business marketing, and I think that my efforts to enhance my writing skills especially will help me in my career, not to mention in my continuing intellectual and scholarly life, through transferring to a four year university to receiving an MBA. This ePortfolio is meant to showcase my thinking processes and writing skills to possible future employers, professors, and peers. Included in this ePortfolio are a few relevant pieces of writing from the last three years which show my growth as a college student and an analytical and creative thinker.

I took a quick look through your ePortfolio, and I have a couple of comments for you.

First of all, the opening picture cracked me up. I think it perfectly sets the tone for your ePortfolio (and gets your reader laughing). Making a table of contents was also a good idea, since it's very easy to get lost in blog-based ePortfolios.

I had a lot of trouble reading the essays because there were no paragraph breaks! Can you fix this? If you can't, you might want to move your essays into Google Documents and then link them to your blog.

The inserted pictures in your essays threw the formatting off, so you might want to put those at the top of the post or delete them all together.

I would have liked to have seen some reflection concerning your essays, as well as the prompt you were given. (Of course, since this is a work in progress, you're probably planning on adding reflection in at a later time.)

That's all for now... You have a good start though! (Picking artifacts was the hardest part for me, and you're already done with that!)

Hi Anna,
I find your ePortfolio very interesting and enjoyed the essays and the pictures that you chose to accompany them.

As the previous commenter suggested, the essays are hard to read in the current layout but I found the analysis thoughtful.

As a reader, I would like to know more about what these essays mean or meant to you as the writer. How does this connect to your personal life. You might discuss this from several angles including being a college student, your family heritage, etc.

In addition, you mentioned that your writing had improved from your earlier essays but you didn't give many details. What do you think contributed to this improvement? Did you have choices as to what topics you were allowed to write about, etc.

Looking forward to hearing more about your writer's journey in the ePortfolio.

Best, Una

Anna, your introduction rocks. Haha, I love the photo!

Other than that the main thing I noticed was something that Una mentioned as well, you didn't explain a huge amount as to how your work has improved. It would be interesting to hear what you have to say about your own progress! Good job though and congrats on being done!

Anna, I felt pretty excited on page one of your ePortfolio because your photo is witty and well-selected and your intro starts off sounding witty and engaging and thoughtful as well. However I was, to be honest, quite disappointed with the rest of what you presented -- presumably due to time constraints or the infamous end-of-the-quarter crunch. Specifically, several of the most important elements of the assignment seemed to have been left out entirely. First, much to my surprise, there was virtually no self-assessment or effort at commenting on the strengths/weaknesses of individual assignments, or of your overall growth as a writer. Second there was no embedded video or audio artifact.

On the whole, therefore, this seemed too skeletal and incomplete to deserve a very high grade. Hence I've decided to award you 200 points out of 300 for this assignment (a C in letter-grade terms). Perhaps due to technical constraints, leaving out the video/audio is understandable. The lack of any self-reflection or self-analysis, however, seems (at least to me) to indicate a pretty serious misunderstanding of what the whole ePortfolio process is all about -- and isn't something that is constrained by "technical difficulties." This is especially true in the case of a student whom I know full well to be thoughtful, reflective, and a great learner.

On the upside I see you did quite a few extra-credit assignments, so I'm hoping the impact on your final grade will be more than offset by these other efforts :)
